PowerOverEthernet Website

The PowerOverEthernet website is devoted to the new Power Over Ethernet technology.

This technology, also known as IEEE802.3af, promises to create a new world of networked appliances, by providing power as well as data over existing Ethernet cables.

Acute Technology personnel established the website, collaborating with web designers on the database-driven content management system that contained all of the product data and news stories.

As well as commissioning the website, we have designed and implemented two products that use Power Over Ethernet power supplies.

The features of these power supplies are:

  • "Power Sourcing Equipment" (typically an Ethernet switch) probes a remote Ethernet device with a low-voltage, current limited signal, searching for a signature that confirms it is Power Over Ethernet compatible.
  • If so, it applies 48V to the CAT5 cable.
  • The 48V is current limited, and can safely supply up to 13W to the "Powered Device" in the Ethernet peripheral.
  • When the peripheral is unplugged, the 48V is removed from the cable.

The IEEE is now working on an extension to the standard, aimed at supplying up to 30W to Ethernet peripherals.
